March poll recap and April poll: If not Shah Rukh, then who?

It was close for a while, but by the end of the March poll, the result was pretty clear: 17 of you want to see Shah Rukh Khan romancing with Shabana Azmi, versus 12 of you (well, of us) who don't.

This is, to me, the best way to see Shabana ji on the screen with Shah Rukh:

See, he knows his place! -- I'm joking; I don't mean to bash Shah Rukh Khan, who with the right script and direction is entertaining enough even to me. But last month's poll does raise the inevitable question: who would you most like to see in an older-woman, younger-man romance with Shabana Azmi? I've put a rather arbitrary selection of choices in the poll on the right; go ahead and register your vote. Shah Rukh is included - but even if you voted for him in the previous poll, he doesn't have to be your first choice now. And, I'm sure I've missed some good candidates, so if you pick "other," please let us know who you'd pick. ETA: yes, I was very sleepy when I wrote the poll and actually didn't include an "other" option. Durrh. You still have the option, just leave a comment! sorry....

Ahaha, glad to see you using that picture. ;)

I voted for Irrfan Khan. Aamir Khan could be interesting too.

Ooh this picture is making me reconsider Shah Rukh Khan. Though I voted for Akshaye Khanna because I'm partial to the Vinod-Shabana pairing of older films.

In reality though I can't think of anyone who would be good enough. Would it be blasphemous of me to suggest Javier Bardem? although he isn't all that younger.

Andromache - I meant to credit you for the picture! Thanks very much. I had to use it ...

fanatica - I hadn't even thought about Vinod when I put Akshaye Khanna in the choices; it's interesting to think about how those ghosts would influence the pairing.

I didn't know who Javier Bardem was so I had to Google him. He's the right age for the kind of story I am thinking of - he's younger than some of the choices in the poll after all. Anyway there's no such thing as blasphemy at SLP. :)

Javier is muy caliente! He has an oscar to boot! he's perfect.. plus he can say things in Spanish that'll make anybody melt.

I've been giving a lot of thought to this... and was delighted to see fanaticadepeliculas mention Javier Bardem! He's an extraordinary and sensitive actor, cerebral and excudes sex appeal. And it would sort of tie in with my fantasy of seeing Shabana Azmi in an Almodovar film. (Javier was in his Live Flesh - not the romantic lead, alas, as Almodovar prefers much younger lead actors) Shabana, of course, is fine for whatever age she is paired with, so - as we are in fantasy land in any case - let me suggest again a director - Almodovar. I trust him to find a suitable match for her.
I will however vote for Irfan Khan now as none of the others appeals to me - well, Shah Rukh Khan does - but perhaps for the wrong reasons.

I liked her with Boman Irani a lot in Honeymoon Travels :-)

Hi Fadista,

I totally agree with you on letting Almodovar do the job. I've been dying to watch "Carne Tremula". Although I did watch Javier in "Mar Adentro" and was thoroughly moved. It would be like a double treat to see Javier with Shabana!

memsaab, I like Boman Irani with Shabana too, but he's not in this poll because despite the fact that he's about 12 years younger than she he's paired with her as a peer - he would not be cast in a younger-man, older-woman romance with her.

By the way, I find it positively smashing that in an industry that made Waheeda Rehman play mother to Amitabh and Shashi, or Nargis play mother to Sunil Dutt, &c &c, Shabana ji gets paired with a partner to a man 12 years younger than she is. Fabulous!

Thank you thank you, anonymous - I missed you too. I am trying to reprioritize and at least get the news posted even if I don't find time for much else.

I will post a April poll recap soon but probably skip the poll for May.

And hey - everyone - send me those guest posts! We can keep the essays and thoughts flowing at SLP even when I'm stuck dealing with my job and stuff!
